Mini EV Prize Solar Sprint RaceStudents build solar-powered cars and compete in the 20m Mini Sprint on a straight track.
This solar car race is aimed at first time students who just want to have fun and learn the skills of engineering and photovoltaics. Mini EV Workshop held as part of National Science Week 2018
A workshop for the Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Festival Mini EV Prize was held this year (2018) in conjunction with National Science Week (13-19 August).
National Science Week is a celebration of science and technology involving thousands of people attending events throughout Australia. It showcases the contributions of Australian scientists and encourages an interest in science and fascination in the world we live in from adults and children alike.
Thanks to the support of Inspiring Australia NSW, the Hunter Region was alive with science events and activities for the whole community across the week of National Science Week. The Hunter Innovation and Science Hub unites and supports a multitude of organisations committed to enabling the broader community to engage with and enjoy the wonders of science, via visual displays, hands-on activities and informative open forum presentations by practitioners and the broader science community.
A massive crowd of over 350 people came along on Saturday 18th August 2018 to the inaugural ‘Science in Practice – Developing our World' activities at Newcastle Universities Callaghan Campus.
First up was the Mini EV workshop where people learned how to build and race their own mini solar car. Children and adults (including some teachers!) came along between 11am to 1pm and dug into the box of parts (solar panels, wiring, wheels, chassis, etc) and build their own mini EV under the watchful eye of Michael Richards from Kite Magic, Emeritus Prof Tim Roberts and his team.
This hopefully inspired some to enter the mini EV competition to be held on 31st October.
There were mini EV kits available for purchase at the event which were popular.
Charlestown Rotary ran a BBQ from 12-2 pm with all profits going to the Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Festival. Thanks folks!
‘Science in Practice – Developing our World’ commenced at 1pm, and involved hands-on activities for the community to engage, with thanks to SMART (Science Maths and Real Technology) shows and UoN Faculty of Science members, hosting everything from soil sampling and geological displays to visualising the science behind home-made solar cells, magnetic high speed trains and earthquake simulation machines. At 2pm a special Q&A session saw professors and academic staff from the Faculty of Science each speak for 6 minutes on topics including Paint-on Energy, Data Science, Microbial beasts, yeasts and ancient reefs, Wildlife restoration, Quantum mechanics and nanomaterials, and more.
It was packed and fun filled. We will need a bigger venue next time!
